Boating licences are documents that recognise a person’s ability to operate a recreational craft. They are issued and administered by the autonomous communities (all autonomous regions with coastlines and archipelagos) with the relevant powers, as well as by the Directorate of the Merchant Navy.
In Spain, the regulations governing the ownership of yachts and motorboats have changed significantly in recent decades. Eligibility can now be determined across a range of categories. Although there are differences between them that make some licences easier to obtain than others, the characteristics or types of vessels to be operated also vary. What all current categories have in common is that they grant access to a wide range of sailing boats or jet skis of any power rating, under any skipper.
Each of these comes with a set of authorisations described in the table below:
